What indirectly causes fungus on simple goldfish? Theory?

Have you tested the water? Perhaps the cycle was thrown off by something and you didn't notice. Healthy goldfish just don't get fungus when in good water conditions. Maybe it wasn't fungus at all but just shedding of the slimecoat? What did you medicate with?
