In a 2002 mercury sable , how many catalytic converters are there, & how much to fix?

I have a friend who's mechanic told her she needs all FOUR of her catalytic converters replaced. I don't believe that there is more than one on her car. It is part of the exhaust system, and as I understand it, there is one per functioning tailpipe. How could there be four?
